Israel's Medical Tourism

Medical tourism prices

For some people, the decision to find an alternative source of healthcare in another country is an easy one, since it can mean better prices, higher quality, and more specialized healthcare options. Whether you are looking for dental procedures, cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation, cardiac procedures, infertility solutions, or something else, there are countries that are frontrunners all over the world and just a flight or train ride away.

Affordability is the primary reason for the popularity of medical tourism, since some patients are finding that they can get better treatment at better prices in other parts of the world. Even health insurance cannot assuage the high prices in some places, and in some parts of the world specialized healthcare is not even available with insurance. Medical tourism brings so much within the reach of so many people, and it often means a vacation to boot, including trips to exotic locations such as Costa Rica, India, Thailand, Israel, and many different parts of Europe or Latin America.

The real price of medical tourism

Obviously, the cost of care is based on where you are going, what you need, and what type of travel arrangements you are planning to make. You can save a lot of money by working with your doctor and a travel planner to get a better deal on the mode of transportation and accommodations. This includes avoiding waiting lists for the procedures and treatments that you need, and in many cases you get healthcare that is not even available in your home country.

When you can save money on your travel arrangements, it gives you more to work with for the medical tourism reason, such as travelling for infertility treatments, heart surgery, rehabilitation, or cosmetic procedures. There are a variety of cost-affecting factors, depending on what you need and where you can afford to travel, but the following is a list of considerations that will normally need to be made in advance:

What is the surgeon’s fee? This is in addition to the hospital stay, and you should ask what your deductible is if you have one.

What medical tests will be necessary? MRIs, blood work, and similar testing come at an additional cost.

How much will it cost to consult with the physician? This should include consultations before and after your procedure.

Will anesthesia be required? When you are having a surgical procedure, even if it is cosmetic, you will need anesthesia or some method of pain relief, and this costs extra.

What is the cost of the surgery? For instance, the surgeon’s fee is only a portion of the cost, since you also have to factor in the price of the operating room and usually a hospital stay.

Where will the family stay during an inpatient procedure? Only the patient can stay at the hospital, so travel companions will need to make other arrangements in advance.

Are special treatments needed after the procedure? An example of this would be ongoing medication, or medical devices like dental implants. They cost extra and will need to be taken into consideration.

How will travel be accomplished? Flights, rental vehicles, and similar travel expenses should be a primary consideration and planned before the trip is finalized. This should include ambulance or similar necessities, which require a lot of planning in advance.

What insurance requirements exist? Your insurance may or may not cover a procedure in a certain country, so make sure you understand insurance and insurance requirements prior to leaving.
